Joel Espinoza, finisher of many 100 mile races around SoCal. A fixture on the scene, his soul and demeanor are as gentle as his smile and eyes appear here. I believe he was deported back to Mexico during covid and is still there.
Jenny Weaver, Tahoe 200. Halfway through and the emotions begin to flow as the reality of what you are doing sets in. (and she happens to be a really good friend, so she got super emotional, not to mention, it was my suggestion she do the race even though she had only started running ultras a few years earlier) She kicked ass and finished.
Katie Wright, Big's Backyard. Not exactly a portrait, but her face and overall vibe just sum up the brutality that the backyard format represents as the hours pileup. You keep moving forward, always just aiming for one more lap. Until you can't.
Daniel O'Malley, Moab 240, Shay Mountain. I came across Daniel wrapped in a blanket, shivering like crazy while his crew attempted to bring him back. I spent about 20 minutes chatting, talking about past experiences suffering in my races all in an effort to motivate him...He had this wild hair, and I had set up some strobes...So after he was feeling way better and stoked about the race, I fired off a shot to highlight his inner fire...
Jared Vanderook...First time finisher, Hardrock. Of all the finish lines I have crossed, none compares to the feeling of seeing the rock as you round the corner on Snowden to 12th street and she comes into view...I remember the fighting the tears alone the last few miles of my first, trying to comprehend that I'm going to finish Hardrock...A feeling that never goes away, no matter how many times you're honored with entry.
